The Reproductive System Flashcards
How do most animals reproduce?
they reproduce sexually. Sperm are created in the testes and eggs are created in the ovaries. When a sperm fertilizes an egg, the two haploid (one one pair of chromosomes each) cells combine to form a diploid (two chromosomes) cell. So now a fertilized cell, has a pair of chromosomes, can start dividing to create a child.
What happens when a sperm fertilizes an egg?
sperm fertilizes an egg, the two haploid (one one pair of chromosomes each) cells combine to form a diploid (two chromosomes) cell. So now a fertilized cell, has a pair of chromosomes, can start dividing to create a child.
What is a key advantage of sexual reproduction (versus a-sexual)?
The key advantage is greater genetic variation. Because you are sharing genetic info between two parents, you get a variety of traits from each. Can be advantage for evolution.
What is a key DISADVANTAGE with sexual reproduction?
it requires a mate. At this certain time, you don’t really have a choice between fertilization. But an A-sexual creature can choose when it decides to create. Aphids can choose when. but then Aphids get to combine DNA. They are more replicated then growing traits.
Algae.. reproduce how?
Algae is one of the oldest organisms on earth. Photosynetic plant reproduces a-sexually.
Fungi -how does it grow/reproduce?
they are not photosynthetic, they grow on decayed things, and don’t need light. Gross! Also grows, reproduces a-sexually
Ferns.. how does it grow/reproduce?
can grow BOTH sexually and a-sexually. They look like totally different plants in different phases of their life. Why they have survived for so long
Angiosperms- what kind of reproducers?
sexual reproducers, flowering plants, sex organs in the flower, pistol and stamen (female and male)
stamen
male organ. think stag
pistol
female organ. that girls a pistol.
Gymnosperms
sexual reproducers, like pine trees that produce cones, after fertalization
