Why did the Renaissance start in Italy?
1) Trade
2) Wealth
3) Celebrities
Why was Italy a hotspot for the Renaissance?
People traveled from Asia to France to trade and had to pass through Italy to get there
Hot spot for artists as many ideas from across the globe were shared in Florence
Italy had rich families who could buy art. They did this by paying artist’s bills in exchange for some of their work (Patrons – Ex. Medici Family)
Italy had some of the biggest names at the time
There was so much talent in the same spot and time, resulting in a lot of work being created
What is humanism and what caused it?
When people began to use new technologies and began to speak their mind. It was caused by art, music, and science.
Who was Leonardo Da Vinci?
- A polymath (engineer, painter, sculptor, inventor)
- “Ahead of his time”
- Created the Mona Lisa (1503-1506)
- Created the tank, the helicopter, and machine guns
- Could write forwards and backwards
- Knew and could write in Latin, a rare language at the time
Who was Michelangelo?
- Didn’t like people, unhygienic
- Was a great artist, admired by da Vinci
- Michelangelo was so good the pope personally invited him to go to things
Who was Niccolo Machiavelli?
- Author
- Was the first man to write a book not about religion
- Was called “The Prince” and it was about politics
- Believed to be about the Medici family
- Known for his famous opinion “the end justifies the means”
Who was Johann Gutenberg?
- Created the printing press, led to the creation of universities
- The church hated this because they didn’t want people to be able to read anything, specifically the bible
why was the Mona Lisa so important?
the mona lisa was crated by da vinci and it was one of the first pieces of art that was not religious. Mona Lisa was also a common person, she was not rich
