Why was France in a financial crisis?
French government was not managing money as well as their rivals in England, King Louis XVI and the Nobles still spent money on unnecessary things
War - i.e. The American Revolution and the Seven Years war
Privileged estate refused to chip in by paying taxes
What is deficit spending?
The government continued to spend more money than they received from taxes
What was the Vingtieme?
A special war tax imposed by King Louis that even the clergy and the nobles had to pay
What was the economic crisis happening in France?
Most of France’s economy was made up from the agriculture industry
Peasants paid most of the country’s taxes, if there is bad weather peasants cannot pay taxes
1787-1789 there were two bad harvests in a row
Unemployment ensued, people were starving, prices were high
People in the third estate were called “Sans – Culottes” because they could only afford pants
Why did King Louis demolish The Thirteen Regional Parliaments?
Because the third estate brought their Cashier de Doleance to them because they wanted to voice their concerns
who were jacobins?
led by robbespierre, the jacobins wanted the revolution to go in a more radical direction and still wanted to work with the King
who were the girondins?
they were an extremist group who wanted to eliminate the king
who was danton?
Jacques Danton
He is appointed as the minister of justice
His task was to find anybody who was against the revolution and try them
he ends up getting executed
what was the reign of terror?
a time full of mass executions. so many people were arrested and executed if they did not show an enthusiastic want for the revolution
