What was the idea of the Reformation?

A
  • The big idea was that in Europe, Christians sought to reform the Catholic Church and the result was a new church referred to as Protestantism.
  • At this time the church was fully in power, if you wanted anything, like a job, you’d have to ask the church

  • The church has a big project going on, the building of the St. Peter’s Basilica Church.
  • The church needed money to finish building this luxurious church really badly

A
  • The church’s solution was to create a series of programs to raise money like selling land, forgiveness, and giving out jobs
  • Negative effects: The poor wind up paying for the churches construction project without realizing it

1) Pluralism - sold land, usually the same piece to multiple people
2) Simony - Gave rich people positions even if they were not qualified
3) Indulgences - Sold pieces of papers to absolve people of their sins

  • Monk and professor at Whittenburg University, Germany
  • Devoted to God and the poor
  • Travelled to Rome in 1510
  • Wrote the Ninety-Five Theses and nailed it to a church door

A

 The popes secret weapon who traveled across Europe
 Kind of like the first “infomercial”
 Was fast at spreading the word and selling indulgences to the masses
 Good for the church’s business, helped fund for the St. Basilica project

A

A

Sola Scriptura – One Scripture
 Idea that Christianity needed one common “owner’s manual”
 Can no longer be making up rules randomly just because they’re struggling financially
 Martin Luther wanted one official book to follow

 Ordered Charles the 5th (Emperor of Holy Roman Empire, Germany) to go after Martin Luther because they saw him as a threat
 Fredrick the 3rd (an elector) likes Martin and tries to protect him
