Protestants
Christians who broke away from the Catholic Church
Tithe
Tax paid to the church paid by the people who are living in the Parish.
Renaissance Popes
They were not holy men.
Some were interested in art, science or politics more than in religion. Eg. Alexander VI.
Simony
The buying and selling of church poitions. It was widely believe that’s Alexander VI paid money to some Cardinals to be elected pope.
Nepotism
Appointing a relative to an important position in the church, e.g. Bishop or Cardinal. Sixtus IV appointed his six nephews as cardinals.
Absenteeism
Bishops or priest not living in their diocese or parishes. This a use was closely associated with pluralism. Some bishops rarely visited their diocese, as they were too busy acting as advisors to their limbs. In England, Cardinal Wolsey only visited his diocese shortly before he died.
Pluralism
Holding more than one position in the church, e.g. Bishop of two dioceses. As people paid a tax to the church this could bring in a lot of money.
Purgatory
Purgatory believed to be a place where sinners, who were not bad enough to go to hell, would spend time before they would be allowed to enter heaven.
Indulgences
Shortening time in purgatory. This was sold by priests in the church.
Reformation
Period of religious change that led to a division among Christians.
