Groups of workers led by members of the Communist Party.

Many German workers were angry about bad pay and working conditions. They had been protesting throughout 1919.
What happened to the Red Army in 1920?
50,000 workers occupied the Ruhr region of Germany and took control of its raw materials. This was one of Germany’s main industrial areas.
What did the German army do about the revolt?
With help of the Freikorps, they crushed the rising. Over 1000 workers were killed.
Was it a success?
The communist party had a weak leadership, with no clear plan. Protests didn’t have alot of support. For the next few years there were lots of strikes, but they never threatened the Weimar government’s control over Germany.
