The rate and extent of chemical changes Flashcards
rate of chemical reaction
Can be calculated by measuring the quantity of reactants used or products are formed at a given time
What is volume measured in
cm3
What is the rate of reaction measured in
grams per cm3
moles per second
What factors affect the rate of reaction
Temperature concentration
surface area
pressure (of gasses)
How does temperature affect the rate of reaction
The higher the temperature the quicker the rate reactions
How does the concentration affect the rate of reaction
The higher concentration of the quicker the rate of reaction
How does the surface area affect the rate of reaction
The larger surface area of the reactants solid the quicker the rate of reaction
How does the pressure affect the rate of reaction
When gases react the higher the pressure upon them the quicker rate of reaction
What is the collision theory
Chemical reactions can only occur when reacting particles collide with each other with sufficient energy
What is activation energy
The minimum amount of energy colliding particles in a reaction need in order to react
What is the catalyst
Change as the rate of a chemical reaction but is not used in the reaction
What are enzymes
Biological catalyst
How do I catalyst work
Provide a different reaction pathway where reactant do not require as much energy to react when they collide
What are reversible reactions
In some chemical reactions the products can react again to re-form the reactants
Equilibrium in reversible reactions
Where there is a reversible reaction occurs in apparatus which prevent the escape of reactants and products equilibrium is reached when the forward and reverse reactions occurred exactly at the same rate
With the collision theory what happens when the temperature increases
The frequency of collisions and makes collisions more energetic therefore increasing the rate of reaction
