Both sides hardened their approaches

They were feeling fearful of congress’ actions
+ they tried to deport leaders of congress = Gandhi
What was Gandhi’s flaws
That his ideas were idealistic, and not really ever going to happen
What was congress’ predicament at this time
Gandhi was the ‘quite India’ campaign however at a time of war it would have been seen as treachery if they went against the Raj now
+ it could destroy the relationship between the raj and nationalists
What were Gandhi’s idealistic ideas
> to make peace with japan when they are independent
> that India should be left to God and if that was not possible, to anarchy

That the Raj would arrest congress leaders

= because without the leaders to keep the people in check it turned violent = there were riots, death and destruction.
= the military remained loyal to the Raj
= It failed to gain widespread support
