Q

What does the famous painting ‘Delivery of the Keys’ depict?

A

The painting depicts Christ’s handing over of the keys to St Peter

The keys became a powerful symbol papal authority - St Peter was considered to be Christ’s successor - the first pope was St Peters successor - thus the church now had possession of Christ’s keys and could grant people their salvation as it was believed the Pope, a man on Earth, now had a direct link to god and rules with divinity
