14
Q

Why does the boiling point increase as the chain length increases?

A

The larger the molecule, the larger the surface area and there is therefore more surface contact so the strength of the London forces is greater. More energy is therefore required to overcome the forces.

Q

What is the effect of branching on boiling point?

A

Branched isomers have lower boiling points.

16
Q

Why do branched isomers of alkanes have lower boiling points?

A

There are fewer surface points of contact between the branched alkanes and therefore weaker London forces.
The branches also get in the way and therefore the chains can’t be as close together.

17
Q

Is there a sigma bond between the carbon and hydrogen atoms?

A

Yes
