Very high in power
- Had the right to raise an army and make decision about the church
- Decide laws and make laws
- Decide how much tax to collect
- However some kings where unsuccessful because they were not strong enough and

He didn’t make many changes
This is because he was very strong in character and could dominate those around him meaning people wouldn’t challenge his power
How did William build apon old methods ?
In reality he didn’t, he didn’t need to use new methods he just used old ones very effectively
What was the ‘government ‘ under William like ?
Centralized government
That’s how he did decision making
He would give his supporters land but they didn’t own it and he also would consult his earls on important issues
What was the royal demsne and why ?
It was the kings land
He owned most of the land in the country
Demesne comes from a Latin word meaning ‘lord’

Played a vital role in building Williams power
- if a king didn’t show power+ wealth they could look weak leaving them vulnerable to rebellion
- the income from the demesne gave William an income to help build castles
- also helped him to show of his wealth as he would wear a splendid crown designed to show his power
What was another reason for Williams power ?
He himself was at the centre of the decision making
Government didn’t take place in buildings separate from the king so he was always physically there
