Pre 1066 Archbishops of Canterbury+York had been equal
Lanfranc insisted he, as archbishop of Canterbury, was superior and controlled the Church

- He held regular councils of bishops
- Councils had previously been rare before 1066 but Lanfranc now held ten councils to discuss and impose Church reforms
Expand on control within bishoprics
-Every bishop now had deputies called archdeacons who policed the bishopric
- they made sure they carried out their church duties correctly
- there had been few archdeacons pre 1066 and they had had little power
Was the arrival of Lanfranc as new head of the church the only change ?
No
By the end of Williams reign all bishops bar one ( Wulfstan of Worcester) where Norman or French
Such as Thomas of Bayeux being the new Archbishop of York
They had fully normanised the church
What where Lanfranc attitudes towards the pope and what did he say to the pope ?
-Although he personally disagreed with the popes reforms he made sure his influence in England didn’t decrease
- he did however tell the pope William was an independent king meaning he pope couldn’t reduce Williams power
