What are the aims of mindfulness?
be in control of the mind by paying attention to PRESENT thoughts and emotions, enhance positive characteristics, become HAPPIER
What are the three main components of mindfulness?
Gaining control of thoughts, meditation and mindful breathing, informal practices of mindfulness
What is gaining control of thoughts?
Focus on present thoughts and emotions, avoid thinking about past (guilt, remorse, worry) and future (worry, anxiousness), recognise negative thoughts and alter response to be more positive and optimistic
What is meditation and mindful breathing?
Formal training in meditation most effective, guided instruction and personal practice, focus on breathing and body sensations
What is informal practices of mindfulness?
Informal mindfulness performed while doing everyday tasks, toothbrush example, opposite to multi-tasking, mind focuses on one single task, when mind wanders should bring back to breathing and sensations
What are the three ways of practicing mindfulness?
Basic mindfulness meditation (e.g. repeat word), body sensations, sensory = touch, sounds, sights

3 or more previous episodes of depression, MBCT reduces reoccurrence rate over 12 months by 40-50%
What does MBCT stand for?

Describe Williams et al study
MBCT as effective at reducing recurrence of depression as antidepressants
One weakness of the effectiveness of mindfulness therapy is that it does not get to the root cause. Explain this.
The psychological disorder may be causes by a traumatic childhood. Therefore, mindfulness does nothing to address the issues that cause the thoughts in the first place and it could keep reoccurring

Patients with 3 or more depressive episodes, randomly assigned to 8 week course of MBCT or continue with antidepressants, relapse rate for both identical after 2 years and they continued to show symptoms
