  • Help stop loss of rural jobs
  • Workhouses for unemployed
  • Poor law
  • Satute of artifisces - stopped wages rising inturn slowing down inflation

  • Poor rate - a tax that goes towards the poor
  • Goes towards workhouses and payment reliefs for the “impotent poor”
  • Introduced due to bad English economy and threat of rebellion

Attitudes towards the poor

A
  • “Impotent poor” - deserving poor, yoo young/old/ill to work, not to blame
  • “Idle poor” - undeserving poor, chose to be poor and faked it, spoke in “canting”, attacked and robbed people and faked injuries
  • Goverment used “Idle poor” to keep a social hierachy and stop rebellions
