The PNS Flashcards
What does ‘The PNS’ stand for?
The peripheral nervous system.
It is one half of the division in the nervous system, the other half being the CNS.
What is the function of the peripheral nervous system?
To relay nerve impulses from the Central Nervous System to the rest of the body, and from the rest of the body back to the CNS
What are the two main divisions of the peripheral nervous system?
1: the somantic nervous
2: the autonomic nervous system
What is the main function of the somantic nervous system?
Carrying sensory and motor information to and from the central nervous system
What is the main function of the Autonomic nervous system?
To govern the brains involuntary activities (such as the heartbeat) in which we aren’t consciously aware we’re doing
What are the names of the two parts that the autonomic nervous system is divided into?
1: the sympathetic nervous system
2: the parasympathetic nervous system
What is the 3 main functions of the sympathetic nervous stem? (fight or flight)
1: responds to stress (fight or flight)
2: focuses on what you need immediately & sends energy there (such as to the heart, muscles, and brain)
3: puts a hold on other body processes (such as digestion)
What issues are there with the systematic nervous system when responding to stress?
Responses to non-immediate stresses are similar to fighting for survival
What is the main function of the parasympathic nervous system? (your parachute/rest & digest system)
It calms you back down when the emergency has passed. Slowly the bodily functions return to working normally
