Lateralisation and split brain research Flashcards
What is Lateralisation
it refers to the idea that the two halves of the brain have functional specialisations e.g left dominant in speech and language and the right is dominant in visual motor tasks
These two hemispheres are connected by the corpus callosum where they can share information
What is split brain research
- the corpus callosum is cut to prevent them sharing information
Sperry and Gazzaniga studied split brain patients
Participants asked to respond when stimuli was presented to one of the hemispheres
Concluded that left hemisphere is responsible for language because verbal no response to the right hemisphere
Evaluation
(-) split brain patients are hard to find and use in research, can’t exactly harm people on purpose to test - typically research has SMALL sample
