The Pleura Flashcards
What does the pleura cover?
Lungs
What are the two layers to the pleura?
Visceral - adheres to lungs surface
Parietal - adheres to thoracic wall
Continuous with each other at the hilum of the lung
What is the pleural cavity?
Space between these membranes, it is lined by a thin film of pleural fluid.
What are the pleural reflections?
Sternal
Costal
Vertebral
What is sternal reflection?
Sharp, anterior reflection where the costal pleura is continuous with mediastinal pleura
What is costal reflection?
Sharp, inferior reflection where the costal pleura is continuous with diaphragmatic pleura.
What is vertebral reflection?
Gradual, posterior reflection where the costal pleura is continuous with mediastinal pleura.
What are the pleural recesses?
Costodiaphragmatic
Costomediastinal
What is costodiaphragmatic recess?
The recess where the peripheral diaphragmatic pleura comes into contact with the lowermost part of the costal pleura during expiration.
What is costomediastinal recess?
the recess where the costal pleura comes into contact with the mediastinal pleura during expiration.
Which functional division of the nervous system innervates the parietal pleura?
Somatic nervous system
Which functional division of the nervous system innervates the visceral pleura?
Autonomic nervous system
