Basic Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 basic types of tissue?
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
Where is epithelial tissue found?
Covers and line surface and internal passageways/chambers
What is the function of the epithelial tissue?
To provide physical protection, control permeability, provide sensation & produce specialised secretions
How is epithelial tissue classified?
To their shape and how they are stacked
Where is simple epithelium located?
Protected areas inside the body eg. blood vessels, heart chambers, lungs
Where do you find stratified epithelium?
In areas that need protection from mechanical stresses, eg. skin surface, mouth lining.
How is the integrity of the barrier maintained?
Intercellular connections
Attachment to basement membranes
Maintenance & repair
What are specialised features of the epithelium (keratin)?
Tough, waterproofing protein
What are specialised features of the epithelium (cilia)?
Move synchronously in one direction to waft substances in one direction
What are specialised features of the epithelium (microvilli)?
Increase surface area for absorption
What are specialised features of the epithelium (goblet cells)
Produce and secrete mucus
What are the roles of connective tissue?
Provides support and structural framework
Establish a structural framework for the body
Protect delicate organs
Support and surround other tissue types
Storing energy reserves
Defending body from microorganisms
Where is transitional epithelium found?
Only in the bladder
What are the characteristics of loose connective tissues?
Abundant ground substance
Sparse cells
Sparse collagen fibres, loosely arranged
Found in skin, gut, respiratory tract, surrounds gland and some blood vessels
What are the characteristics of dense irregular tissue?
Lots of collagen fibres
Not arranged in an order
Few cells (mostly fibroblasts)
Little extracellular matrix
Very strong
Found in skin & hollow organs
