How was travel dangerous in Ireland during the 1500s?
Travel was dangerous because of outlaws.
Even men would not travel alone.
Explain the central government in Ireland during the plantations and name the king in England at that time.
There was no central government in Ireland.
Henry VII was king of England at the time,and called himself ‘Lord of Ireland’ but he only controlled a small area around Dublin.
It was called The Pale.
Who ruled the rest of the country?
Powerful noble lords ruled the rest of the country.
Explain the division of Ireland in 1500s.
Ireland in the 1500s was divided into three sections;the area controlled by the Gaelic Lords,the area controlled by the Old English lords and The Pale.
The Old English lords were descended from?
The Normans.
The Old English Lords was descended from the Normans.
Explain by the term ‘The Pale’.
The Pale is a small area of land around Dublin controlled by the King of England
What were the Gaelic Lords’ law for marriage?
- Wives could keep their own names and property when they married.
- Divorce allowed
- Children born outside of marriage were entitled to a share in their father’s property.
What were the the law for lands for Gaelic Lords?
- Land belonged to the whole clan.The clan’s huge herd grazed on the land and a person’s wealth was calculated by the number of cows they owned.
- Those who farmed the land had few rights but they moved from lord to lord,depending on where they could get the best deal.
What were the Gaelic Lords’ laws for clothing?
Women:long tunic and a mantle (cloak)
Men:knee-length tunic and a mantle.They often wore a moustache and a fringe called a glib.

- A wife took her husband’s name and he took control of her property and money.
- Divorce not allowed.
- Children born outside marriage could not inherit their father’s property.
What were The Pale’s law for land?
- The richer people in the pale were landowners (large farmers) and merchants (in trade).The eldest son inherited the land or business.
- Tenants who rented the land had leases which fixed their rent and allowed them to farm land for a set number of years.
What were The Pale’s law for clothing?
- English dress.Men and women wore shoes and English fashions such as stockings,cloaks and long gowns.
The men were often clean-shaven.
