The Pituitary Gland Flashcards
1
Q
What does SIADH stand for?
A
syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion
2
Q
How is SIADH defined?
A
syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion from the posterior pituitary. It is defined by hyponatraemia and hypo-osmolarity resulting in inappropriate continued secretion or action of ADH despite normal or increased plasma volume resulting in water secretion
3
Q
What is the role of ADH
A
To allow reabsorption of water by inserting aquaporins in the collecting duct of the nephrons in kidneys. ADH causes dilation of the blood which decreases the concentration of solutes e.g. Na
4
Q
What hormones does the anterior pituitary gland release?
A
TSH ACTH FSH/LH GH Prolactin
5
Q
What hormones does the posterior pituitary gland release?
A
Oxytocin
