What is hyperaldosteronism?
excess production of aldosterone, independent of the RAAS system–>increased sodium and water retention and decrease in renin release
When should you consider hyperaldosteronism?
When a patient not on diuretics has HTN, hypokalaemia or alkalosis
What are the symptoms of hyperaldosteronism?
often asymptomatic
signs of hypokalaemia, weakness, cramps, paraesthesia, polyuria, polydipsia
HTN (but not always!)
What are some possible causes of hyperaldosteronism?
aldosterone producing adenoma
bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia
What is another name for primary hyperaldosteronism?
Conn’s syndrome
How can you treat Conn’s syndrome?
laparoscopic adrenolectomy with spironolactone for 4 weeks post off to control BP and K+
