The Philippines as a Multi-Hazardous Location Flashcards
Multi-hazardous locations tend to be:
Coastal or island nations e.g. the Philippines
Describe the Philippines and it’s location.
The Philippines is a chain of islands surrounded by water, south-east of mainland Asia and close to the Equator. It sits on a destructive plate boundary within the Pacific Ring of Fire.
Which hazards do the Philippines experience?
Typhoons, storms, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions, droughts, landslides and more.
What is the Philippines’ economic status?
The Philippines is a lower/middle income country (according to the World Bank) that is rapidly developing. In 2016, the GDP per capita in the Philippines was US$2,951. Many people are very poor and are residents near the coast.
From 1900-2012, how many volcanic eruptions took place in the Philippines, how many were killed and affected, and how much was lost (economically)?
Between 1900-2012, there were 25 volcanic eruptions, claiming almost 3000 lives and affecting almost 2 million people. A quarter of a billion US$ was lost in total.
List the impacts of the Mount Pinatubo eruption in June 1991.
- Large ash clouds were sent into the atmosphere, spreading over South East Asia within 3 days.
- A dome on the side of the volcano collapsed, creating a pyroclastic blast and huge lahars.
- Due to the effective monitoring and management, only 350 died, and 4,300 were injured.
- There was a total economic loss of US$710 million, mainly in agriculture and property.
From 1900 to 2012, how many earthquake events took place in the Philippines, how many were killed and affected, and how much was lost (economically)?
From 1900-2012, there were 24 earthquake events, in which almost 10,000 were killed and around 2.5 million were affected, costing the Philippines US$528.5 million.
List the impacts of the Bohol Earthquake in 2013.
The Magnitude 7.2 earthquake claimed 222 lives, injuring 976 and damaging/destroying 73,000 houses.
Describe the last major tsunami to hit the Philippines.
- Struck the Moro Gulf in the southern Philippines on August 16th 1976.
- Prompted by a magnitude 7.9 that struck the nearby island of Mindanao, that then released a series of tsunamis.
- The tsunami waves (which reached heights of 15 meters) hit provinces such as Cotabato the hardest, and coastal communities bore the brunt of the disaster. The death toll was over 8,000.
From 1900 to 2012, how many typhoon events took place in the Philippines, how many were killed and affected, and how much was lost (economically)?
From 1900 to 2012, 267 typhoon events occurred claiming almost 40,000 lives and affecting over 100 million, costing the Philippines US$ 7 billion.
In some years 10 typhoons occur in a season, with approximately 6-7 major storms a year. They are the clear most devastating hazard faced by the Philippines.
