Q

Why was the London Docklands Development Challenge needed?

A

The London Docklands were used to store shipping containers, but these went into a decline by the 1970s due to container ships being too large, as well as the introduction of containerisation meaning there was a severe loss of jobs in the area. 83,000 jobs were lost between 1961-1971. This lead to spiral of decline in the area, with the population of Tower Hamlets decreasing by 18%, and the QoL decreasing due to decreased accessed to services like banks.
