The Periodic Table COPY Flashcards
What does the period number represent
The number period an element is in represents the number outer shells the atom has.
Why do elements in the same group of the periodic table have similar chemical properties
Because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shells. This means they will behave in a similar way; they will react and bond similarly.
What are noble gases a family of
Noble gases are a family of inert gases
Why are noble gases generally unreactive
Because they have full outer shells (they don’t loose or gain electrons so do not participate in reactions)
Diffusion
The spreading out of particles in a gas or liquid . They move from a region where they are high concentration to low.
Group 1 elements - lithium, sodium and potassium
All these metals react with water to produce a metal hydroxide and hydrogen. Metal + cold water -> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
Sodiums reaction with water
The sodium floats because it is less dense than water. It melts because it’s melting point is low and a lot of heat is produced by the reaction. Because the hydrogen isn’t given off symmetrically around the hall, the sodium is passed around the surface of the water. The white trail is formed in the sodium hydroxide, which dissolved to make a strongly alkaline solution
Why are group 1 metals often called alkali metals
Because all these metals react with water to produce alkaline metal hydroxides.
What does the group number represent
The number of the group represents the number of electrons on an atom’s outer shell.
What are periods
Periods are rows on the periodic table
What are groups
Groups are columns in the periodic table
Do metals conduct
Metals are all conductors
Do non-metals conduct
Nonmetals don’t conduct
What is the acid-base character of metal oxides
Metals form metal-oxides which are alkaline
What is the acid-base character of nonmetal oxides
Nonmetals form non-metal oxides which are acidic
