The Periodic Table Flashcards
What is an element?
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
What is a period?
A row of electrons in the periodic table.
What is a group?
A column of elements in the periodic table with similar properties?
What are the three categories that elements that can broken up into?
Metals, Non-Metals and Metalloids
What are the properties of metals?
Solid state Shiny lustre Generally malleable Conductors Less than 4 valence electrons
What are the properties of non-metals?
Solid, liquid or gas state Dull lustre Brittle if solid Insulators More than 4 valence electrons
What does the atomic number tell you?
The number of protons (and electrons)
Defines what element it is (because of the number of protons)
What does the atomic mass tell you?
The average number of neutrons in an element.
How do you find the number of neutrons?
Atomic mass - Atomic #
What is an atomic mass?
The average mass of an element
Measured in atomic mass units (amu)
What are isotopes?
A form of an element that has a different number of neutrons
