Properties and Changes Flashcards
What is a physical property?
A characteristic or description of a substance.
What are examples of a physical property?
Colour Texture Smell Melting Point State
What is a chemical property?
A characteristic behaviour that occurs when the substance changes into something new.
What are examples of a chemical property?
Flammability
Corrosive
Oxidizer
What is a physical change?
A change that does not produce a new substance.
It can be reversed.
What are examples of a physical change?
Melting
Evaporation
Dissolving
Cutting
What is a chemical change?
The change that a substance goes through to produce a new substance.
What are the five pieces of evidence that a chemical change has happened?
- New colour appears
- Heat or light is produced or absorbed
- Bubbles of gas are formed
- A solid material (precipitate) forms in solid
- The change is difficult to reverse.
How can you determine which gas is produced in a chemical change?
Hydrogen - a burning splint brought to hydrogen will cause a popping sound
Oxygen - a glowing splint brought to oxygen will ignite a flame
Carbon Dioxide - a burning splint brought to carbon dioxide will extinguish a flame
