The Periodic Table (2.6) Flashcards
1
Q
Periods
A
- horizontal rows
- often consist of trends in properties
2
Q
Groups
A
- columns that include elements with similar chemical properties (a.k.a families)
- some groups or more similar than others
3
Q
What groups are the “main group elements”
A
Groups 1,2, and 13-18
4
Q
Which groups are the transition elements?
A
Groups 3-11
5
Q
Which groups are the inner transition elements?
A
They’re fit into group 6 and 7 (found at the bottom of the periodic table)
6
Q
What are metals and some of their properties?
A
- elements to the left of the stepped line in the PT, or a mixture of such elements
- usually solid at room temperature, conduct heat and electricity, malleable, and ductile
7
Q
What are nonmetals and some of their properties?
A
- hydrogen or any element to the right of the stepped line on the PT
- tend to be brittle and nonconducting when solid at room temp
- many are gases at room temp
8
Q
What are metalloids and their properties?
A
- elements near the stepped line between metals and nonmetals on PT
- have some properties of metals and nonmetals
