The Periodic Table Flashcards
What is an element?
A substance that contains only atoms that have the same number of Protons
What are the two types of elements?
Natural and Artificial (made in the lab)
What does the Periodic Table do?
Arranges the elements based on their atomic number, number of electron shells, and number of valence electrons
What is an atomic number?
The number displayed above the symbol on the periodic table, symbolizing how many protons are in the nucleus of that atom
What are electron shells?
The shells that hold the electrons surrounding the nucleus allowing the electrons to orbit
What are Valence electrons?
The electrons that exist in the outermost shell and generally capable of forming bonds with other atoms
How many elements are currently listed on the Periodic Table?
118
What are the columns called in the Periodic Table?
Groups
What do elements in the same group have in common?
The same number of valence electrons (Therefore often sharing similar properties)
What are the rows on a Periodic Table called?
Periods
How many Periods are there on a Periodic Table?
7
How many Groups are there on the Periodic Table?
18
What do elements in the same Period have in common?
The number of electron shells are actually filled by electrons
What is the charge of an ion from an element in group 1?
1+
What is the charge of an ion formed from an element in group 2?
2+
