Bohr model Flashcards
1
Q
What do we use to draw the structure of an atom?
A
Bohr diagrams
2
Q
What are the 4 rules when drawing an atom?
A
- The nucleus is at the Centre of the atom (represented by the chemical symbol)
- Surrounding the nucleus are shells of electrons, these shells are drawn as rings
- A maximum of 2 electrons are in the 1st shell and a maximum of 8 electrons are in all subsequent shells (this is the octet rule)
- To create a new shell, all previous shells must be at their maximum capacity
3
Q
What is an electron configuration?
A
A list of the number of electrons in each shell e.g. Mg (2,8,2) 12 electrons in total
4
Q
What are the steps to drawing an atom
A
- Look at the element on the Periodic Table
- List everything we know about that element
- Assemble diagram
