What is a revolt?
An uprising against government authorities; a rebellion.
Who revolted in the 14th century, asking for better living conditions?
Peasants.
3 reasons why French peasants revolted in 1358?
- Their farmland was destroyed by war
- Assault and robbery from mercenaries
- High rent from manor lords
French noble reactions to the revolt
Arson to villages, leaders of the rebellion were hanged.
What caused the labour shortage in England?
The Black Death.
What effect did the labor shortage have on English peasants’ wages?
Their wages went up because they could charge more due to lack of workers.
2 ways English nobles angered peasants after the wage increase
- Poll tax to pay for the war
- All wages were to return to pre-plague state (LESS)
Why was the poll tax unpopular with peasants?
They paid the same amount as nobles and suffered more.

The guild workers opened the gates
What happened to the two leaders?
Wat Tyler was killed by the Lord Mayor of London and John Ball was imprisoned, later hanged.
What crimes did the peasant army commit?
Arson and murder of nobles
What happened to peasants after the revolt?
Their lords hanged/killed them after they returned to their farms
Was the revolt a success?
No, but it led to the eventual fall of serfdom.
