How did the Crusades lead to more trade?
Western Europeans realized they could trade with distant lands

Fairs and imported goods made people realize they could also trade.

What are chartered towns? Why do peasants hide in them?
Towns that paid/have the right to exist and govern itself. If a peasant ran away for a year and a day they were no longer bound to their manor, feudal lords had no power over who lived in towns.
How did the guild make sure it continually made money?
Members make payments to the guild. They also made sure quality and prices of products were consistent.

Some large guilds had a court to settle member disputes and hand out punishment.
Who were the most powerful people in a town?
People in merchant guilds.
Types of guilds
Craft guilds (skills) and merchant guilds (trades)
Why do you think people left manors to start lives in towns?
They could increase their status through hard work/making money and live however they wanted to.
What jobs were the new middle class?
Merchants, SHOP OWNERS, business owners, guild members, crafts people, bankers, lower ranked church officials.
Why did the middle class grow in size and importance?
People were needed for their skills/items in a money based economy. People could also work towards becoming middle class.

They had signs/symbols due illiterate people.
Master
Needs approval from the guild by proving skills (masterpiece) and playing politics. Masters can open shops and take apprentices.
Services from the guild
- Help each other during poverty
- Send food and two caretakers when ill
- They controlled working conditions
- Attended each other’s funerals
- Stopped outsiders from selling competitive products
- They cannot hurt each other (10 shillings and retake oath)
