Translation of Magna Carta

How did the Magna Carta set limits on royal authority?
- Royals cannot interfere with the church
- Taxes need to be approved by the Great Council (made of lords and clergy)
- The monarch is not above law
- Subjects must be treated according to law (fair trial, etc.)
What’s the Magna Carta?
One of the most important documents in history. It guaranteed free people certain rights and bound the king to laws for the first time.

Why was the Magna Carta so significant?
It was start of rights and liberties for the common folk. It was also the first time the King was challenged and had his power limited.
Why did King John give into the Pope?
Most people were very Christian and were upset about the interdict.
Who was King John?
Ruled 1199-1216, was an English king. He lost a war and ceded land to France. He argued with the Pope about a new archbishop and himself and England unable to receive services from the church (excommunicated). He then raised taxes to pay for the war.
