The Park Model Flashcards
What is the Park Model?
The Park Model plots the quality of life after a disaster against the time after the disaster has occurred. This usually shows the deterioration of the quality of life of people affected and how fast they are able to return to normality.
What are the advantages of The Park Model?
-The Park Model helps to create a clear visual of how quality of life changes following a hazard.
- Allows for the comparison between the pre-disaster situation and directly after each stage of the model to assess which st5age has had the greatest success.
What are the potential downfalls of The Park Model?
-The model does not take into account inequalities in development and resources.
-Can be considered too general and not specific enough about the frequen cy and magmnitude of different hazards and how they impact recovery.
What does the Relief stage involve (stage 1)?
The immediate response following a hazard - search and rescue, provision of emergency medical assistance and aid.
What does the Rehabilitation stage involve (stage 2)?
A longer phase that includes temporary restoration of services and infrastructure e.g. temporary schools and shelters are set up
What does the Reconstruction stage involve (stage 3)?
Permanent restoration which aims to provide the same or an improved quality of life than before. For example, the rebuilding of infrastructure using aseismic designs.
