Intraplate boundaries - Hot Spots Flashcards
1
Q
How do hotspots form?
A
- Concentrated spots of radioactive decay in the earth’s core heat the lower mantle.
- This causes magma plumes which rise vertically through the crust.
- The hotspots themselves are stationary but they increase the intensity of volcanoes.
2
Q
What landforms occur due to hotspots?
A
chain of sheild volcanoes
3
Q
What hazards occur due to hotspots?
A
- low magnitude earthquakes
- effusive volcanoes (frequent, low risk)
4
Q
Give an example of a hotspot.
A
Hawaii active plume zone at Mauna Loa.
