what is the Dhammapada?
a collection of verses which summarise the main teachings of the buddha on karma and the path to enlightenment
what are The Jataka Tales?
stories of the buddhas past lives, which he saw when he became enlightened and demonstrate the effects of karma
what is The Patimokkha?
the monastic code of conduct including 227 rules for monks and 311 rules for nuns
what do Lay buddhists do in relation to the scriptures?
*most lay buddhists would not have read or studied the scriptures, they really rely on monks to explain teachings
what do buddhist monks do in relation to the scriptures ?
only the most scholarly study the scriptures fully, however the scriptures form the basis of monastic life ad are read allowed and followed
what is the Pali Canon?
the collection of Therevada scriptures
what makes up the Tipitaka?
the three baskets-
- the Sutta Pitaka
- The Vinaya
- The Abhidhamma
What is the Sutta Pitaka?
the basket which contains all the sermons of the buddha
- The Dhammackkappavattana sutta
- The Dhammapada
- The Jataka Tales
- the Metta Sutta
- the discourses of king milinda
what is the Vinaya Pitaka?
this is the code of conduct for the monastic sangha, includes the patimokkha and also explains what prompted the buddha to make each rule
also contains the Four Parajikas
what are the Four Parajikas?
- committing murder
- having sex
- serious theft
- making false claims about reaching enlightenment
what is the Abidhamma Pitaka?
this book represents the pinnacle of the buddhas teachings, explaining the stories of the sutta pitaka. It attempts to systematically go through all of existence and categorise the dharmas
what would a monk haver to do if they committed one of the parajikas?
they would have to leave the monastery
what are some of the monastic rules?
- not to use money
- not to lie
- not to remain alone with a woman in a remote place
