Dramatic Incident

A

Drowning ponyboy – ‘the hand at the back of my neck was strong. I’m drowning, I thought’
Johnny kills bob – ‘I killed him’
Church is on fire – ponyboy and johnny run to the church and save the kids results in johnny being in critical condition
Johnn dies last words – ‘stay gold ponyboy, stay gold’
Dally gets shot by the police – he was jerked half around by the impact of the bullets, then slowly crumpled

Effective opening/ending

A

Show division between west side and east side – ‘West – side rich kids’
Learn About protagonists, ponyboy (he is an outsider) – ‘I’m not like them nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do.’
We learn about his family – ‘I love soda more than I’ve ever loved anyone, even mom and dad.’
Ending gives us closure –ponyboy gets to stay with his brothers and learn to cope with his friends’ deaths

Dally

A

Loyal – helps johnny and ponyboy to find a place to hide
Protective of johnny – “you get hardened in jail. I don’t want that to happen to you”
Troublesome –“ had been arrested at the age of ten” and “they have a file on him down at the police station”
Careless - the fight for preservation had hardened him beyond caring”
Seems self – absorbed at first but we see he cares about johnny – “johnny was the only thing dally loved” and dally robs a shop after johnny’s death

Why did you enjoy the novel

A

Relatable - “what kind of world is it where all I have to be proud of is a reputation for being a hood, and greasy hair”(loss of identity)
Interesting characters – Johnny “quiet, defeated – looking sixteen year old ” dally “tough tow-headed boy”
Descriptive writing – “tall elm trees made park shadowy and dark” and “my stomach gave a violent jump”
Exciting plot – “police after us for murder”
Unexpected development- church goes on fire resulting in Johnny’s critical condition
Interesting setting – “greasers are almost like hoods;”*
* Not strongest point
