Dramatic Incident
Drowning ponyboy – ‘the hand at the back of my neck was strong. I’m drowning, I thought’
Johnny kills bob – ‘I killed him’
Church is on fire – ponyboy and johnny run to the church and save the kids results in johnny being in critical condition
Johnn dies last words – ‘stay gold ponyboy, stay gold’
Dally gets shot by the police – he was jerked half around by the impact of the bullets, then slowly crumpled
Effective opening/ending
Show division between west side and east side – ‘West – side rich kids’
Learn About protagonists, ponyboy (he is an outsider) – ‘I’m not like them nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way I do.’
We learn about his family – ‘I love soda more than I’ve ever loved anyone, even mom and dad.’
Ending gives us closure –ponyboy gets to stay with his brothers and learn to cope with his friends’ deaths

Inconsiderate- ‘darry’s always rough with me without meaning to be’
Distant – ‘me and darry just didn’t dig each other’
Turbulent – ‘he can’t stand me. I bet he wished he could stick me in a home’

PB realizes darry is caring – ‘darry is a good guardian’
Johnny
Loyal – kills bob for drowning ponyboy
Heroic – saves children from a burning church
Moral – “I killed a kid last night […]. How’d you like to live with that?”
Thoughtful – “how’d you know I always wanted one? Replies “I remembered you sayin’ something about it once”
Timid – “a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times”
Brave – “I had seen johnny take a whipping with a two by four from his old man and never let out a whimper
Dally
Loyal – helps johnny and ponyboy to find a place to hide
Protective of johnny – “you get hardened in jail. I don’t want that to happen to you”
Troublesome –“ had been arrested at the age of ten” and “they have a file on him down at the police station”
Careless - the fight for preservation had hardened him beyond caring”
Seems self – absorbed at first but we see he cares about johnny – “johnny was the only thing dally loved” and dally robs a shop after johnny’s death
Ponyboy
Different - “I’m not like them, nobody in our gang digs movies and books the way i do”
Loyal – Runs Away with Johnny after he kills bob
Deep thinker – “Burning ember”

Why did you enjoy the novel
Relatable - “what kind of world is it where all I have to be proud of is a reputation for being a hood, and greasy hair”(loss of identity)
Interesting characters – Johnny “quiet, defeated – looking sixteen year old ” dally “tough tow-headed boy”
Descriptive writing – “tall elm trees made park shadowy and dark” and “my stomach gave a violent jump”
Exciting plot – “police after us for murder”
Unexpected development- church goes on fire resulting in Johnny’s critical condition
Interesting setting – “greasers are almost like hoods;”*
