The OSI Model Flashcards
This layer of the OSI model is the physical part of a network
Involves signaling, cabling, and connectors
this layer isn’t about protocols
“you have a physical layer problem”
fix your cabling punch downs, run loopback tests, test/replace cables, and swap adapter cards
analysis of signal across the network
Layer 1 of the OSI Model the Physical Layer
This layer of the OSI model is the basic network “language”
this layer of the OSI Model is the foundation of communication and uses data link control protocols (DLC) like MAC (media access control) address on the Ethernet
switches makes forwarding decisions based on these MAC addresses, this layer is known as the switching layer.
In this layer of the OSI Model, data gets transformed into frames and involves MAC addresses aka physical addresses of a system device that operates on a logical topology. This layer of the OSI Model also involves switches.
Layer 2 of the OSI Model the Data Link Layer
This layer of the OSI Model is known as the routing layer and is associated with IP addresses
This layer deals with IPv4 and IPv6
This layer also deals with multilayer switches
Any devices making forwarding decisions based on IP addresses is communicating on this layer
This is the layer where frames are fragmented into smaller pieces to move between different networks
Layer 3 of the OSI Model the Network Layer
This layer of the OSI Model is known as the post office layer and describes how data is delivered and where data is being delivered into a system
Think of a mailman looking at the mail and figuring out where to sort the mail and send it
Protocols used at this layer are TCP (transmission control protocol) and UDP (user datagram protocol)
This layer is used when your accessing a webpage, but the webpage is so large it can’t send all the data in the network in a single frame
the separated pieces in this layer are then put back together on the other side
Layer 4 of the OSI Model the Transport Layer
This layer of the OSI Model deals with communication management between devices
Think of two people having dinner together at a restaurant/date when thinking of this layer of the OSI Model
-start, stop, & restart
This layer of the OSI Model involves separated conversations of data
This layer of the OSI Model involves control protocols and tunneling protocols
On this layer a device asks, “can we talk?” & its communicating information to Google, which will then set up a session and begin transferring information
SSL also refers to this layer
And net bios or file sharing over network deals with this layer
H.323/H.364 or streaming audio and streaming video deals with this layer too
Layer 5 of the OSI Model The Session Layer
This layer of the OSI model involves character encoding.
This layer formats data to be exchanged and secures the data with encryption
Think of placing a poster together for an analogy when thinking about this layer
This layer of the OSI model takes data and places it in a form we can understand.
This layer of the OSI model involves application encryption like SSL/TLS
Layer 6 of the OSI Model the Presentation Layer
This layer of the OSI Model is the layer we see
This layer of the OSI Model involves HTTP,FTP, DNS, POP3, & SSL
This layer of the OSI Model involves transferring file with FTP, performing name resolution with DNS, or using a browser with HTTPS or HTTP
Layer 7 of the OSI Model the application layer
This layer of the OSI Model is the layer we see
This layer of the OSI Model involves HTTP,FTP, DNS, POP3, & SSL
This layer of the OSI Model involves transferring file with FTP, performing name resolution with DNS, or using a browser with HTTPS or HTTP
This layer of the OSI Model involves file and network transfer
This layer of the OSI Model involves application services, which unites communicating components from one or more network application.
This layer of the OSI Model involves SMTP and POP 3
Layer 7 of the OSI Model the application layer
