Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Flashcards
The physical address of a device and identifies a device to other devices on the same local network. An example looks like 00:1B:44:11:3A:B7
Media Access Control Address (MAC)
This type of address identifies devices globally. Network packets need this and MAC addresses to reach destinations. An example is 192.158.1.38
IP Address
This assigns devices with IP addresses & also provides them a subnet mask, default gateway, & DNS server. This operates over ports 67 and 68 using UDP (user datagram protocol). This performs a Discover, Offer, Request, & Acknowledge process or DORA. This also uses UDP, afire and forget mode.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)
A list of valid IP addresses available for assignment or lease to a client computer or endpoint device on a given subnet
Scope
This excludes some IP addresses from being handed out to devices unless they meet a certain condition. You can set this up for your printer so it gets the same IP address
DHCP Reservation
Any host that forwards DHCP packets between clients & servers. This is used when the client device and the DHCP server are not located on the same subnet or network. This helps prevent a DHCP server in every subnet or mini network in every network.
DHCP Relay
This forwards several different kinds of UDP broadcasts across the router and can be used in conjunction with the DHCP relay
