what happens in book 5
summary
Hermes sent to Oggygia to tell Calypso to let Odysseus leave, because Athene asked Zeus.
Calypso helps him build raft and supplies him.
near mainland there is a storm from Poseidon which destroys the raft, Ino sends him a veil.
Odysseus then arrives at the Phaeacians where he sleeps…
what happens in book 6
summary
Nausicaa has a dream where Athene enters as her friend and tells her to clean her clothes by the shore.
She asks her farther and takes a chariot down to the shore where they clean and play ball.
Odysseus comes out of the hedge, they run apart from Nausicaa as Athene gave her bravery.
Athene makes Odysseus handsome and so Nausicaa says he can come to the palace, she leaves him at the grove so he can come in separately, she gives him directions to the palace and doesn’t says to see the queen first
what happens in book 7
summary
Odysseus enters the city under a cloud from Athene (who tells him to see the queen first), walks past the big ships and appears in front of queen Arete.
Odysseus is welcomed as a guest and they feast with music.
Odysseus explains how he met Nausicaa and then starts to tell his story
what happens in book 9
summary
Odysseus tells the story of how he left late but got hit by a storm and eventually landed at the cicones here they plundered and then lost 72 men
the second storm for 9 days blew them to the lotus eaters where he sent a few men in and had to get them himself
they arrive at the cyclopes where 12 men enter… polyphemus swears odysseus(once he revealed his true identity) will return home alone on a strangers ship
what happens in book 10
summary
arrive at Aeolus (God of wind) who gives them a bag of wind which means they can sail home easily, crew open and are blown back to Aeolus who refuses to help fearing the Gods.
they row to the laestrygonians (giants) where they get trapped in the harbour apart from Odysseus’ ship which was parked outside.
travel to Aeaea home of Circe, sent 22 men out where they are turned to pigs, Odysseus goes to rescue them but is given a Moly by Hermes to protect him. he overpowers her and sleeps with her and in the morning the men are turned back but he lives there for a year.
Before leaving Circe says to sail to Hades to speak with Tiresias for directions to Ithaca, before leaving youngest crew member dies falling of building.
Circe gives them a black ewe to sacrifice at the hall of Hades
what happens in book 12
summary
they return to Circe from the underworld where they bury the dead crew members body.
Circe tells Odysseus to go through the sirens, wandering rocks and Scylla and Charybdis and tells them they will reach Thrinacie, the sun Gods island where they must not touch any of the cattle.
They do this, going past Scylla and the sirens but when they arrive at Thrinacie the crew eat the cattle so Zeus strikes the crew with a lighting bolt when they set off.
odysseus floats for 9 days and arrives at Ogygia
