What did the North account for between 1950 and 1980 regarding GDP?
Almost 80% but only contained 20% world pop.
South accounted for 80% world pop. but only 20% GDP.
What is group 1?
Affluent countries e.g.USA.
Dominated global economy for past 50 years.
Other countries now emerging to test their supremacy.
What is group 2?
Contains emerging economies.
30 countries with capita GDP growth rates 3.5%+
Total pop. 3 billion/50% world’s pop.
China and India.
High growth levels - may replace group 1 countries.
What is group 3?
50 countries/1 billion people.
Important natural sources e.g. 60% proven oil reserves.
Haven’t been able to translate wealth from natural resources into sustainable economic growth as of yet.
What is group 4?
Lagging behind - poorest economies. 1 billion people. Stagnate/economic decline. Isolated from global economy - facing crucial development challenges. Most in sub-Saharan Africa.
Why was there a split into 4 economic groups?
South tried to achieve economic improvement relative to rich North countries.
Wealth-generating activities redistributed from richer to poorer zones.
What have South states done to improve their economies? 4
- Increased ability to pursue autonomous industrial policies.
- Change trade rules.
- Secure higher levels of development assistance.
- Encourage transworld movement - makes global economy more fair.
