The Nitrogen Cycle Flashcards
Which bacteria are involved in nitrogen fixation?
• Azotobacter - in free living
• Rhizobium - in root nodules
What do the bacteria involved in nitrogen fixation do?
Combine N2 with H2 to form NH3 (ammonia)
What are the bacteria involved in nitrification?
• Nitrosomonas - oxidises ammonium compounds into nitrites (NO2^-)
• Nitrobacter - oxidises nitrites into nitrates (NO3^-)
What are the stages of the nitrogen cycle?
• Nitrogen fixation
• Nitrification
• Ammonification
• Denitrification
Where is azotobacter found?
Free living in the soil
Where is rhizobium found?
In root nodules of plants
What does nitrosomonas do?
Oxidises ammonium compounds into nitrites (NO2^-)
What does nitrobacter do?
Oxidises nitrites into nitrates (NO3^-)
