Lipids Flashcards
What are the two main categories of lipids?
Triglycerides and phospholipids
What is the general structure of a triglyceride?
• One molecule of glycerol
• Three molecules of fatty acids
What are fatty acids made up of?
• A carboxylic group
• A long chain of hydrogen and carbon atoms
What are saturated fatty acids?
Fatty acids that contain only single covalent bonds between carbon atoms
What are the types of unsaturated fatty acids?
• Monounsaturated fatty acids
• Polyunsaturated fatty acids
What group does glycerol molecules have three of?
Hydroxyl groups (O-H)
What are the bonds in triglycerides called?
Ester bonds
What enzyme breaks ester bonds?
Lipase
What is the structure of a phospholipid?
• One molecule of glycerol
• Two molecules of fatty acids
• One molecule of phosphate (which is negatively charged)
Are phospholipids hydrophobic or hydrophilic?
Hydrophilic (due to the negatively charged phosphate)
What part of cholesterol is hydrophilic?
The hydroxyl group
