THE NEW RIGHT Flashcards
What is The New Rights 2 Perspectives on Education?
-One is they believe that competition encourages success
-School should be more like a business
What’re the diffrences in terms of political ideologies
Hint: Left Wing (Labour)
Right Wing (Conservative)
-Left wing: They are progressive and see society as unfair/unequal hence their policies seek to change society for the better
-Right Wing: Value tradition and their beliefs wishing to keep society the same and seek return of traditions!
What is neoliberalism?
economics set of beliefs thats had a major influence on education policy since 1979 wether Conservative, labour or coalition.
What do Neoliberals argue
The state should not provide services such as education
depends on how well it allows the country to compete in the global marketplace
-Schools should be run more like a business and use competition to drive up standards
-Empower parents and pupils as consumers
What do Neoliberals believe the state fails to do and why
Believes the State fails at meeting peoples needs for reasons including:
1.Pupils are put into a one size fits all classroom
2.Bright pupils are held back by weaker pupils
3.The local consumers who use schools have no say.
Therefore they believe the state is unresponsive and inefficent!
What does Social deprivation mean?
The lack of certain basic needs that someone requires e.g. housing which in turn causes the individual to be disconnected from society
What is The New Rights belief will happen when their regime is put into work
They believe grammar schools will lift standards and make all other schools in their area raise their game (as a result of competing for the same students) This will in turn boost social mobility!
Name 3 Similarities between Functionalist and The New Right
!.Some are naturally more talented than others
2.Favour an educartion system that runs more meritocratically
of open competition and serves the needs of the economy by preparing the young people for the working world
3.Education should socialise pupils into shared beliefs such as compeititon
What do The New Right identify as a problem in Education
-Too much goverment money is spent on education incorrectly
-Low standards of education means many leave school without sufficent levels of education and qualifications

Leauge tables

Return to grammar schools!
What are Leauge Tables
League tables are rankings of schools or universities based on their performance, usually measured by exam results and other metrics. They help parents and students assess the quality of education but can oversimplify the situation and lead to teaching focused solely on test scores. Overall, they provide useful information but also have limitations.
Who are Chubb and Moe
Chubb and Moe are education scholars known for their book “Politics, Markets, and America’s Schools,” where they argue that competition and choice in education can improve school quality. They compare public and private schools, suggesting that private schools often perform better due to greater autonomy. Their ideas advocate for reforms like charter schools and vouchers to create a more market-driven education system.
What is the Return to grammar school
The “return to grammar schools” is a debate in the UK about reintroducing selective secondary schools that admit students based on academic ability. Supporters argue they provide high-quality education and raise standards, while critics contend they increase inequality and pressure on students. Some areas still have grammar schools, and the discussion continues over their impact on education and social equity.
How do “The New Right” Think schools parents and students should be precieved?
They believe students should be viewed as “consumers” and “customers” and should be able to “buy” education
This will lead to schools having to compete for the “best” pupils (the brightest) vailble!
The National Curriculum is one way to create a shared culture:
TRUE OR FALSE?
