What is The New Right view in education?
State run schools fail to perform its roles because of centralised state controls/policies to promote equality
Why was the New Right Perspective popular?
In the late 70s Thatcher promoted The New Right Perspective, it aligned with Conservatism in regards to promoting competition/choice
What was the New Right’s aims towards education?
Reduce LEA power, introduce market forces, enhance roles of businesses in schools, promote raising standards and choice for consumers
What was the 1988 Education Reform Act?
It introduced: National Curriculum, OFSTED, league tables, market forces, vocationalism and Local Management of Schools
What does releasing league tables promote?
Parentocracy, parents can see the achievements of all the schools in the country to choose where to send their child/competitions amongst schools
What does the National Curriculum promote?
It promoted equality by telling schools to teach children the same things
What are the weaknesses of the National Curriculum?
It didn’t apply to private schools and didn’t accommodate all pupils
What are the weaknesses of league tables?
Only shows raw data, ignores backgrounds and behaviours of students, doesn’t give the full picture only academic achievements
What is a weakness of the New Right perspective?
It promotes choice but ignores poverty (i.e. freedom of choice in schools is the freedom a poor person has when dining at the Ritz)
What do Chubb and Moe argue about education?
Private schools perform better because they’re funded by and answer to parents
