What is the functionalist view of education?
Education allows socialisation of children and creates/sustains social solidarity
What does the functionalist perspective suggest?
Education teaches the norms and values of society/teaches the hidden curriculum/protects children/socialises children/prepares children for adult life
What is the functionalist perspective?
Structural theory- social institutions have power in society
Consensus theory- social institutions unify society and create collective consciousness
Organic analogy- all parts of society work together for the benefit of all
What does Parsons say about education?
It creates a bridge between particularistic values of the family and universalistic values of school/status is achieved based on the values of meritocracy/education is an important mechanism in role allocation (pupils are sorted into careers based on skills)
What does Durkheim say about education?
Education teaches the skills necessary for a future career (Division of Labour- separation of tasks in an economic system)
What is collective consciousness?
Shared beliefs and moral values
What is social solidarity?
The idea that people feel that they belong to a certain group of people
