What are the five uses of ‘lo’
– as a thing / things (followed by adjective)
e.g. No me gusta lo amargo.
– to express an entity, place, or abstract idea.
– as a part of something;
e.g. Lo importante de la vida es el fin.
– as how (instead of cómo or la manera en que).
e.g. Quedó sorprendido por lo absurdo de su manera de ser
– to express the degree or nature of something; to emphasize the idea of that adjective
Qué es lo romántico para ti?
(What is the romantic ideal for you?)
When do you not use lo to describe something abstract?
When forming a superlative.
e.g. Mi perro es el más inteligente.
(Use the definite article + más + adjective to form a superlative.)
I don’t understand the things that you do.
No entiendo lo que haces.
The important thing is that she comes.
Lo importante es que venga.
It’s all the same thing for me if we go to the beach or to the pool.
Me da lo mismo si vamos a la playa que a la piscina.
