The Neural Code (Level 4) Flashcards
Why is information encoded?
For the purposes of communicating & processing.
What is the core of brain function?
The neural code
How can local brain networks encode information?
Via small, generic processing units
How can global brain networks encode information?
Via an aggregate of related processes that take place as units in dedicated brain regions that can be identified via location codes (on a map).
How can large-scale connectivity help with encoding information?
Via intra-cortical pathway streams that act as “information highways”.
How can highly specific encoding occur in the brain?
By the extraction of categories, identification of properties, taking of measurements, adjustment of specificity, & management of limited capacities.
What is the purpose, aside from specificity, of extracting categories during encoding?
To encode an identity (an essence, not a detail)
What is the purpose, aside from specificity, of identifying properties during encoding?
This acts as a filter.
What is the purpose, aside from specificity, of taking measurements during encoding?
This tells us about the intensity/ frequency of a stimulus.
What is the purpose, aside from specificity, of the adjustment of specificity during encoding?
For tuning
What is the purpose, aside from specificity, of the management of limited capacities during encoding?
For compression of the distribution code.
