Q

What is the central nervous system?

A

it is a division of the nervous system

  • its role is the processing of incoming information and the preparation of responses
  • in order to do this the brain must be able to receive information from sensory receptors (eyes, ears and skin) and send messages to the muscles and glands of the body
  • it comprises of the brain and the spinal cord

Q

What is the role of the spinal cord?

A

it is a division of the CNS
it relays information between the brain and the rest of the body
this allows the brain to monitor and regulate bodily processes such as digestion and breathing
the spinal cord can also make decisions without the brain knowing

Q

What is the role of the brain?

A

it is a division of the CNS
it is the control centre for the nervous system
the brain can be divided into four parts:
cerebellum - involved in controlling a person’s motor skills and balance (it coordinates the muscles to allow certain movements)
The diencephalon it contains the thalamus - relay station for nerve impulses routing them to the appropriate part of the brain where they can be processed
The hypothalamus - regulates body temperature, hunger and thirst
