Neurons and synaptic information Flashcards

1
Q

What are sensory neurons?

A

carry nerve impulses from sensory receptors to the spinal cord and the brain
when these impulses reach the brain, they are translated into sensations of i.e heat, pain etc so that an organism can act appropriately
some sensory information travels only to the spinal cord to allow reflex actions without the delay of sending impulses to the brain

Q

What are relay neurons?

A

they allow sensory and motor neurons to communicate with each other
they lie wholly within the brain and the spinal cord

Q

what do motor neurons do?

A

form synapses with muscles and control their contractions
when stimulated, motor neurons release neurotransmitters that bind to receptors and triggers a response which leads to muscle movement

Q

what is synaptic transmission?

A

refers to the process by which a nerve impulses passes across the synaptic cleft from one neuron (the presynaptic neuron) to another (postsynaptic neuron)
