The nervous system and the eye (P2C2) Flashcards
How does electrical stimulation help scientists understand the brain?
Electrically stimulating a specific part of the brain can provoke a reaction from the patient depending on what that section of the brain controls.
How do MRI brain scans help scientists understand the brain?
MRI scans use strong magnetic fields to show details of brain structure and function. A patient can be asked to perform a task, and the MRI can reveal what part of the brain is active.
Where can the cerebrum be found?
The top half of the brain (‘main chunk’) is the cerebrum, the outer layer is the cerebral cortex.
Where is the cerebellum in the brain?
The cerebellum can be found at the back of the brain below the cerebrum.
What is the function of the cerebrum?
The cerebrum controls memories, intelligence, personality, thoughts and most other mental aspects.
What is the function of the cerebellum?
The cerebellum controls balance, co-ordination and muscular activity.
What is the function of the medulla?
The medulla controls unconscious activities such as breathing and heart rate.
What is the function of the hypothalamus?
The hypothalamus regulates conditions in the body.
